Honoring the Moon Deity
The Ooc-bom-bok festival is held to worship the Khmer Moon Deity and pray for good luck, happiness, good weather and bumper crops. People erect bamboo poles with a crossbar that they decorate with flowers and leaves. Below, a table is laid with offerings of green rice flakes, potatoes, bananas, coconuts, grapefruits, oranges and cakes. As people gaze at the moon, a master of ceremonies says prayers and asks the Moon Deity to receive the people’s offerings
After the ceremony, the children of the house are given a handful of green rice and asked to make a wish. If they answer clearly and politely it is considered lucky for the coming year. After wards, people eat, dance, sing and organize games. At the pagoda, flying lanterns are lit. It is believed that these lanterns carry sadness and impurity away from the village.
